Vallenders Testimonial: How to grow out colour

Selecting the right hair colour as you start to turn grey can be a daunting decision.  Tempting as it may be to select a shade close to your natural colour, re-growth will be far more visible, particularly if your hair is dark, resulting in more frequent appointments to touch up the roots.

Patricia Youngson, a regular client at Vallenders salon, experienced this very issue, and decided that the best course of action would be to gradually lighten the tone of her hair, making maintenance far more manageable.

“‘I had reached a stage when I was colouring my every three weeks as the grey hair roots began to show. Being naturally dark, I had continued to keep my hair the same colour, however, I was tired of having to colour it so often.

At about the same time, I decided that I wanted a different style, but was unsure what I wanted, or what would suit me. I had a consultation with Jo and told her that I wanted something, “fun, funky and sophisticated,” which is probably quite a tall order!

Jo immediately suggested a soft, asymmetrical look, showed me a picture of what she had in mind and I agreed. I was thrilled with the result! It was a completely new look and it felt great. I had complements from family, friends, people at work and even my yoga class.

Her recommendation for a colour change was equally successful! Jo suggested a lighter base shade so that any grey hair would blend in more naturally, along with high and low lights to add tone and depth. I love the colours and won’t have to colour my hair nearly so often!

Jo was able to visualise a totally different look for me. My new style is easy to maintain and colours are warm and complimentary.’” — Patricia Youngson

Jo Herve, Salon Director at Vallenders, undercut her hair, giving shorter underneath layers and longer layers on top.

Jo said, “Lightening the hair to a dark blonde, whilst adding highlights to the parting and darker tones under the fringe to the side (close to your face) means that the transformation is far more subtle.  Short, modern haircuts that frame your face and complement your stature are much more flattering and make you look far more individual too.”

With plans to go lighter still, the gradual lightening of Patricia’s hair will help keep her hair healthy whilst limiting those costly touch-ups to hide regrowth.
